Agency.com + YouTube = New Business?
Published August 2nd, 2006 in UX NewsAgency.com asks:
“What happens when an interactive agency goes to work for SUBWAY? Late nights, fun times, and lots of sandwiches. When Agency.com has the chance to win the SUBWAY interactive business, they immediately go to work… in the restaurants, on the streets, and, of course, on the internet. Check out their viral video, send it to your friends, and help them spread the good word of, um, mustard.“
Agency then posted the video on YouTube ahead of going back to Subway with a response. Additional outtakes posted here.
The original video was posted two days ago and has generated over 8000 views. The blogosphere has exhibited mixed reviews on this novel approach. Personally, I’m impressed by the novel approach, but not sure that Agency connected all the dots.
Update
Coudal Partners have responded to Agency.com with a “viral” video of their own. Watch it here: Coudal Unsolicited.
From Coudal’s website:
A couple hours ago Michele posted a link to a video produced by agency.com as a way to promote themselves in pursuit of landing the coveted “agency of record” status on the Subway fast-food, er, I mean quick-serve account. It’s truly amazing and we thought it was pretty much asking for someone to respond in kind. You ought to take a minute to watch as much of theirs as you can stand before checking out our our unsolicted response.
Update II
Don’t forget to pick-up your own “if we roll, we roll big” t-shirt.
God bless the interwebs.

Brilliant, blogged. They totally deserve some attention for pushing the envelope in an increasingly conservative business.

Looks like folks at Agency.com are keeping a close eye on the blogosphere chatter occuring over this initiative. I’ve tracked 10 hits from 5 unique users at Agency in the last 30 minutes c/o Technorati.
I give them an A for guts and a C- for execution. The whole thing seemed self serving to me. I winced as I was watching it—and that is never a good sign. I could be totally reading into this, but it all felt so staged. To be fair, at least they tried something a little different.
Update. We can all go home happy with a T-Shirt!
